Dubai’s Umm Suqeim Beach is set for a major transformation after Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum approved a Dh500 million master plan to redevelop the popular waterfront destination. The project, led by Dubai Municipality, aims to turn the 3.1-kilometre stretch into a world-class beach destination while preserving its distinctive Emirati identity. It is part of Dubai’s wider strategy to enhance public beaches and strengthen the emirate’s appeal as a global tourism hub. “Today, we approved the Dh500 million Umm Suqeim Beach master plan,” Sheikh Hamdan said. “The project is part of our ongoing drive to enhance Dubai’s beaches with world-class design elements that reflect the city’s spirit of innovation and creativity… Dubai is a jewel among cities and a pearl among beach destinations, and the quality of life of its residents and visitors remains our top priority.” The development will expand the beach area by 30 percent across 445,000 square metres. Smart lighting systems will illuminate 130,000 square metres of beachfront, allowing for safe night swimming and evening activities. The redeveloped beach is expected to welcome up to 6 million visitors annually. Parking capacity will increase by 200 percent to around 2,400 spaces, alongside improved road access from Jumeirah Street and better traffic separation from nearby residential areas. New features include six architecturally designed gateways, 10 mobility hubs, 11 taxi pick-up and drop-off points, dedicated cycling and e-scooter facilities, and a 38-metre observation tower inspired by Dubai’s maritime heritage. The project also prioritises sustainability. Plans include a two-kilometre retaining wall to address rising sea levels, elevated beach levels, and an AI-powered smart facilities management system to improve operational efficiency. Sheikh Hamdan added: “The development of Dubai’s infrastructure, including its public spaces and waterfronts, is part of an integrated vision to create a holistic urban environment that meets community expectations and reinforces Dubai’s position as the best city in the world to live, work, and visit.” The beach redevelopment supports the Dubai Quality of Life Strategy 2033 and the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, which focus on sustainable urban growth, waterfront development and enhanced community wellbeing.
