Motorists in Abu Dhabi who fail to give way to emergency vehicles face a hefty penalty of Dh6,000, six black points, and a 30-day vehicle impoundment, the Abu Dhabi Police warned. In a recent announcement, the Traffic and Security Patrols Directorate stressed the critical importance of yielding to emergency responders. Major Faisal Rashid Al Dhanhani from the directorate explained that three types of emergency vehicles must be given priority on the road: police vehicles, ambulances, and civil defence units—provided they are using their emergency lights. “These vehicles are first responders to all types of emergencies and accidents. Giving them the right of way can save lives,” said Al Dhanhani. He emphasized that the primary purpose of the penalty is not punishment but public awareness. “Clearing the way for emergency vehicles contributes to the rapid intervention of police and paramedics, which facilitates life-saving efforts in the quickest time possible,” he explained. Authorities have urged the public to prioritize safety and act responsibly when hearing or seeing emergency vehicles approaching. “The aim is not to issue fines but to convey the message that giving way to emergency vehicles is essential,” Al Dhanhani added. The law applies on all roads across Abu Dhabi, and violators will be penalized under the existing traffic code. Motorists are reminded to always check their surroundings, move to the side of the road when needed, and never block access to emergency paths.
