A major makeover of Dubai’s public beaches is now complete, with the Dubai Municipality saying that the project cost Dh93 million. The revamp covered public beaches in  Jumeirah 1, Jumeirah 3, Umm Suqueim 1 and Al Mamzar Corniche. The beaches now have expanded sandy areas for recreational activities and reinforced safety features. According to the Dubai Municipality, a total of 112,000sqm of space was added to protect areas prone to erosion and raise beach levels to avoid flooding during storms. "The project contributes to efforts to create a world-class tourism and community infrastructure, enhance sustainable economic development and expand leisure facilities and investment opportunities," said Dawoud Al Hajiri, Director General of Dubai Municipality. Jumeirah 1 now has 125,000 cubic metres of beach sand, with coastal protection increased by 160 metres. In Jumeirah 3, the beach front is now wider by 580,000 cubic metres, with 30,400 cubic metres of rock protection installed. Umm Suqeim 1 beach has been expanded by 30,000sqm. A new 325-metre breakwater was also constructed. Al Mamzar Corniche Beach has reclaimed 9,000sqm of land, with a 100-metre breakwater constructed. Last month, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum announced a major plan to develop 54km of beaches around Palm Jebel Ali, The Palm Jumeirah, Al Mamzar and in Jebel Ali.
