Exhibition shows 25 dresses of Diana, Princess of Wales she wore over the years prior to her tragic death in 1997

LONDON – An exhibition of 25 dresses worn by the late Diana, Princess of Wales, opens today at Kensington Palace, home of the beloved member of the British royal family and estranged wife of Prince Charles. The exhibition is billed "Diana: Her Fashion Story". A media preview of the clothes Diana wore – from frilly dresses to power suits that she loved to wear for sometime prior to her untimely death in 1997 or 20 years ago in a car crash in Paris, France – was held last Wednesday. The exhibition will feature 25 clothes of Diana. It opens with a lacy party dress that Diana wore in 1979 to a ball at Althorp, her family home, and includes many of her most famous outfits like the midnight blue silk velvet gown designed by Victor Edelstein that she donned at a White House state dinner in 1985. It was in that event that Diana danced the night away with actor John Travolta. Through the exhibition, the public will be able to see Diana's clothes up close whose workmanship has been described as refined. Some of the clothes are simple and structured while others took careful thought and meticulous preparation. Deirdre Murphy, senior curator at the Historic Royal Palaces, was quoted as saying that Diana used her clothes to communicate and was also a risk-taker as she challenged the conventional image of a British royal family member. "She got her image across and her ideas across using clothing in a really sophisticated, really smart, really thoughtful way," Murphy said.
