At DIFF 2016, Samuel L. Jackson talks about his journey to Hollywood and his unique rise to fame
DUBAI – Becoming one of Hollywood’s popular actors wasn’t exactly Samuel L. Jackson’s “career goal”, but it happened anyway, the actor said at a session in Dubai for the Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF).
Jackson talked about his cinematic life and times during an “In Conversation” session on Friday at the Madinat Theatre.
Growing up in Tennessee, a young Jackson shared a house with his grandparents and aunt who was a performing arts teacher, whom he credits for steering him towards acting.
“She was putting me in costumes, making me learn speeches, teaching me dancing,” Jackson recalled, adding that he enjoyed the experience.
“People were coming to me and saying how great I was... It kinda stuck with me. I continued doing plays... to the point that the teachers said you have to give others a chance,” he said.
Did the Hollywood dream for someone from Tennessee looked far-fetched?
“I wasn’t working towards that and I wasn’t thinking about it. But I spent an enormous amount of time in the theatre. From 9 in the morning to 10 at night. It was not something I chose as a vocation. It was not a career goal. It was an activity I liked,” Jackson said.
When did he start thinking about taking up acting as a career choice?
“It wasn’t until my junior year in college and I took up public speaking course and the teacher… the professor was directing a play for the opera. So I got into play and I haven’t stopped doing it since. I got into play. That was the one thing I realized: I want to get up everyday and go to acting class. To be in the theatre, to be with people,” he said.
Marking the beginning of a long and prosperous career, Jackson entered the world of cinema in ‘Together for Days’ in 1972.
Following a plethora of varied character roles, he made a mark on the film community with his breakout performance in Spike Lee’s drama ‘Jungle Fever’ (1991) as drug-addict Gator, for which he received a special prize for Best Supporting Actor from the Cannes International Film Festival.
Jackson would go on to grow into one of Hollywood’s most respected and prominent actors, reaching a new height with his 13th film ‘Pulp Fiction’ (1994) and earning international recognition with a BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actor, and Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations, for his defining performance as Jules Winnfield.
Jackson was honoured recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award during opening night of DIFF alongside acting great Rekha and renowned composer Gabriel Yared.
