The UAE is preparing to launch a new digital ID system using facial recognition to replace physical Emirates IDs in key sectors such as banking, healthcare, and hospitality. The new system, which is expected to go live within the next year, will rely on biometric identification and facial recognition technology. It is expected to eliminate the need for residents to carry physical Emirates ID cards when accessing essential services. The announcement was made during a session of the Federal National Council (FNC), where member Adnan Al Hammadi raised concerns over the continued requirement to present physical Emirates ID cards despite the country’s advancements in digital transformation. Al Hammadi pointed out that patients must still show their Emirates ID to access healthcare, while banks and hotels often require the original card for transactions and check-ins. Responding on behalf of the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security (ICP), Minister of State for Federal National Council Affairs Abdul Rahman Al Owais assured that the transition to digital ID is already underway. Al Owais said that the e-Emirates IDs are already integrated into many services, and the ICP is working to expand their application across key sectors including banking, healthcare, hospitality, and telecommunications.
