Congolese-American ex-NBA player working on forming group to buy Houston team

  HOUSTON - Congolese-American NBA legend Dikembe Mutombo is working on putting together a group to buy the Houston Rockets – the team he last played with before retiring in 2009. In an interview with Fox 26, the 51-year-old Mutombo said: "I'm working on it. I'm talking to a lot of people already since (Monday). We'll see. I'm just talking to the people who can cut the check and they can make me be part of it. I'm working on that." "The Rockets are a great franchise. They have a great team. They've got great coaches, great basketball players, great staff. Whoever is coming in, it's not like they're going to have to rebuild it. I'm trying to convince some people about trying to buy this team. It's one of the best franchises right now. It's really the right time." After deliberating with his family and friends, Leslie Alexander earlier announced that he is putting up the Houston team for sale after 24 years as owner. He did not say why. Houston Rockets chief executive Tad Brown has been tasked by Alexander to oversee the sales process. Alexander bought the Houston team in 1993 for US$85 million Forbes placed the team's worth at US$1.65 billion with revenues of more than US$200 million. Observers however believe that the Rockets would sell for more than US$1.6 billion. Yahoo Sports said the Houston Rockets "is in the 10th largest television market in the nation, it has long been stable and built up a large and loyal fan base, and with two superstars (James Harden and Chris Paul), the Rockets are one of the NBA's top four teams by any measure and that means good gate and sponsorship money in the arena for the next few years. This team is going to be profitable, which is attractive to potential buyers." As regards Mutombo, Yahoo Sports said he "has shown himself to be a pretty shrewd business man over the years, but there are a limited number of people who can either buy a team at the expected prices or put together a group who can." Mutombo is regarded as one of the greatest shot blockers and defensive players of all time, winning the NBA's Defensive Player of the Year award four times. He is also an eight-time All Star.
