Qatar's response to demands 'overall negative,' says Egypt's Foreign Minister Shoukry

  CAIRO – Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt announced on Wednesday that they will continue their diplomatic and economic boycott of Doha. This after Doha's replies to the list of demands pushed by the four-nation coalition to end the crisis were "overall negative and lacked any substance", according to Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry. Shoukry told reporters: "This position shows the lack of awareness of how dangerous the situation is." The foreign ministers of the four countries met at the Egyptian capital on Wednesday to discuss Qatar's response to the demands. Neither side disclosed Qatar's full response to the 13 demands and the next steps to be taken by the four countries were not revealed. The foreign ministers will meet again in Bahrain on a date that will be determined soon. "We will consult and we will take future steps in the right time," said Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir. The coalition cut diplomatic relations and land, sea and air travel to Qatar because of Doha's alleged support to extremism, an accusation which Qatari officials denied and called as baseless. They sent a list of demands to Doha to end the crisis and gave Qatar 10 days to comply with them. Among the key stipulations were: closure of Al Jazeera and its affiliation, a reduction of ties with Iran and for Doha to stop interfering in the internal affairs of the four countries. Last Monday's deadline for Doha to comply with the demands was extended to yesterday (Wednesday) following a request from Kuwait, which is acting as mediator between the coalition and Qatar. Doha had said that the demands violated international laws and "were made to be rejected." Qatar Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani told CNN, "If you are looking at the demands -- there are accusations that Qatar is supporting terrorism -- they are shutting free speech, shutting the media outlets, expelling people... there are a lot of demands which are against the international law." He also denied that Qatar is financing terror group. "If there is any Qatari who are involved in financing any terrorist organization, he will be held accountable for the wrongdoing he has done," he said.
