Film sets new record in advance ticket sales in the US, according to online service

  HOLLYWOOD - Rather than cut the "gay moment" from "Beauty and the Beast", Disney has pulled out the live-action remake of the 1991 animated classic from theaters in Malaysia. This, as the Disney movie has set a new record for advance ticket sales in the US, displacing "Finding Dory" shown last year. "Beauty and the Beast" hit theaters yesterday worldwide and will be shown in the US today. Controversy has erupted though over the movie because of the inclusion of a gay character, Le Fou – sidekick of the antagonist Gaston -, and an "exclusively gay moment" between two male characters. Malaysia had the "gay moment' deleted from the film and gave the movie a PG-13 rating because it contained material deemed "inappropriate" for pre-teens. Russia, on the other hand, slapped an adults-only rating on the movie because of pressure from an ultra-conserviative lawmaker who sought a ban on the film. A theater in the US state of Alabama is not going to exhibit the movie because of the gay character while parents in Hong Kong have protested the inclusion of Le Fou in the movie as they believe it is "too early" for children. In reaction to the move of Malaysian censors, Disney said in a statement emailed to Malay Mail Online, "The film has not been and will not be cut for Malaysia." Golden Screen Cinemas, the largest theater chain in Malaysia, will refund those who purchased tickets in advance. Meanwhile, the US online service Fandango reported that "Beauty and the Beast" has become the number one family time of all time in terms of presales. The distinction was previously held by Disney-Pixar's "Finding Dory". Fandango said "Beauty and the Beast" is surpassing "Captain America: Civil War" , "Avengers: Age of Ultron and", and "Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice", although family movies often are bigger presellers than superhero movies. Disney said it expects "Beauty and the Beast" to gross between US$120 million and US$140 million when it opens today.
