DMW to prioritize digitalization of OFW processes

Secretary Susan Ople of the newly formed Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) assured senators on Wednesday that DMW is working to "digitalize all processes" OFWs are required to go through "so they do not need to line up repeatedly." At a hybrid organizational meeting of the Senate Committee on Migrant Workers, Secretary Ople updated lawmakers on the formation of the DMW and its proposed legislative plan, saying that the DMW was envisioned as "the primary agency tasked to protect the rights and promote the welfare of overseas Filipino workers." Meanwhile, Senator Raffy Tulfo, who presided over the session on Wednesday, pressed the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) for reassurances that it will assist stranded overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) at shelters around the world. Initially constituted in the 18th Congress, Republic Act 11641 was signed into law on December 30, 2021, and the new department officially opened for business on February 3, 2022. Secretary Ople, in her initial presentation, sought the senators' support for the "most urgent priority" of her department to digitalize all processes. "Our mandate is to really reach out to OFWs as the primary agency tasked to protect them," she stressed. To combat the rising tide of illegal recruitment, which is currently conducted primarily via social media, Ople said the DMW is digitizing all OFWs processes and collaborating closely with law enforcement agencies to track human traffickers.
