Doctors remove tumor the size of a basketball from Sharjah woman

  SHARJAH – A team of specialists from University Hospital of Sharjah (UHS) successfully removed a 6kg uterine tumour the size of a basketball from a female patient. The woman, 28, was admitted to UHS with a huge abdominal swelling. Doctors at UHS found out that she had a uterine tumor growing inside her. The swelling had caused her continuous pain, difficulty in digestion, and movement problems for years. She had undergone several medical tests in different hospitals in the UAE before her confinement at UHS. Her condition was initially thought to be abdominal distension, but following a series of radiological exams, she was found to have a huge uterine tumor of unknown nature and with a complex adnexal mass. Some of the tumor markers were high as well. Some hospitals were reluctant to perform the surgery because of the risks involved. They were looking at the possibility of her having a malignant tumor, which could lead to the removal of her uterus and ovaries. After thorough study of her case, Dr. Mohamed Zayed, Consultant in Obstetrics, Gynecology and Laparoscopic Surgery and his team at UHS performed the complex surgery on the woman. The doctor successfully pulled off the surgery and removed the huge tumour, which was found to be benign. “The patient recovered completely after the surgery. Another good news is that her doctor was able to completely preserve her uterus and ovaries and, consequently, her fertility. It was a high-risk surgery, but we have the right team of specialists led by Dr. Zayed and top-notch resources to successfully operate,” said Ali Obaid Al Ali, UHS Chief Executive Officer.
