Doctors save Filipina in Abu Dhabi from blindness-causing tumour

  DUBAI – A 41-year-old Filipina in Abu Dhabi got the “best ever New Year gift” after doctors removed a tumour that could have led to her blindness. The Filipina, who works as a nanny in the UAE capital, underwent a 12-hour surgery to remove the 4cm tumour in her left eye. A team of doctors in Abu Dhabi's Burjeel Medical City, worked in the marathon surgery to save the expat's vision. Dr. Salim Kanaan, consultant neurosurgeon at Burjeel Medical City, said the location of the tumour made the surgery very challenging. "Any error while doing the surgery would have caused blindness or damaged the patient's optic nerve," he said. Thankfully, doctors were able to remove the tumour without damaging any blood vessels or the optic nerve and the surgery was a success. Meanwhile, the Filipina said she had been living with vision problem in her left eye for a long time before having it checked at Burjeel Medical City. Doctors found that the tumour was pressing on her optic nerve, which caused vision problems and also caused her eyeball to bulge or protrude. The team used a first-of-a-kind surgery using MRI technology to give surgeons a real-time scan of the patient and enable them to remove the tumours with clinical precision.
