Nine-foot bronze statue of O'Neal unveiled outside Staples Center

  LOS ANGELES, California - Los Angeles Lakers star cager Kobe Bryant paid tribute to retired Lakers stalwart Shaquille O'Neal, describing the latter as "the most dominant player" he has ever seen. Bryant praised O'Neal during the public unveiling last Saturday (Friday in the US) of a nine-foot bronze statue of Shaq at the Star Plaza outside the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Staq's statue, which depicts the player hanging from a basketball rim during a dunk shot, joins those of sports legends Magic Johnson, Jerry West, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Chick Hearn, Luc Robitaille, retired boxer Oscar de la Hoya and Wayne Gretzky. Aside from Bryant, also present in the unveiling ceremony were former LA Lakers coach Phil Jakcson, West, Jabbar and Derek Fisher. In a speech during the event, Bryant said, "The thing that was most impressive to me was that he was such a fun and outgoing guy. Loves to tell jokes and have fun with his teammates but before tipoff something happens. The switch goes off of him. He no longer jokes around, he's no longer playing around. He's not smiling anymore and he's trying to dominate." O'Neal, who was accompanied by his family, thanked his former teammates, coaches, the fans and the Buss family. Shaq joined the NBA in 1992 and was the number one pick of the Orlando Magic in round one of the league's draft that year. After his stint with the Magic, O'Neal joined the Lakers, staying with the franchise for eight seasons. He also played with Miami Heat, Phoenix Suns, Cleveland Cavaliers and the Boston Celtics then retired in 2011.
