But drivers express concern over safety of the vehicles

DUBAI – Many motorists in the UAE are interested in driverless cars but they also voiced concerns about the safety of the vehicles, according to a recent survey by YouGov's Omnibus Service. The study showed that 57 per cent of respondents are aware of ongoing driverless car trials in Dubai and 61 per cent believe that driverless cars will allow them to go around easily even if they do not know how to drive. The survey further showed that 43 per cent of the respondents believe that driverless cars will help reduce traffic congestion on major roads in the emirates.

Other findings of the study are:

* Only 43 percent of those surveyed believe they would be safe in a driverless car in comparison to cars driven by humans; * 73 percent of UAE residents worry about the risk of technology failure such as the car failing to stop at traffic lights; * 69 percent of the respondents fear software hacking and mechanical failure of a driverless car; * 72 percent favor creating separate lanes or roads for driverless cars. "Driverless cars do offer a promising alternative to driving and would reduce the number of road fatalities due to human error. However, public dilemma related to their security, and how these autonomous vehicles are likely to behave when surrounded by human motorists, leave much room for technology experts and regulators alike to ensure self-driven cars are indeed safe in all situations," said YouGov senior research manager Anjali Chhabra. With regard the main reasons for using a driverless car, many of the respondents mentioned commuting to work and travelling on a highway but they will not use driverless cars in emergency situations or bringing children to school.
