Commuters will soon experience driverless taxis in 2023

Dubai commuters may soon be able to ride driverless taxis to their destinations by 2023. Cruise Inc, a US vehicle firm backed by General Motors and Honda will launch its first international robotaxi service Origin in the emirate in partnership with the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). Ten Origin vehicles will start their rigorous testing in the country later in the year and hope to carry passengers in late 2023. The autonomous taxis will be able to respond and recognize other drivers safely with their equipped laser detection with a 360-degree view, a ranging system with high definition 3D maps, and over 100 sensors for detecting the distance from objects with up to one-centimeter precision. The taxis are capable of carrying six people with their seats facing each other and enough room to carry their luggage. The vehicles are equipped with Start/Stop button in the passenger compartment that allows the passengers to start or stop the trip before reaching their destination and will then assess the nearest suitable parking space before the passengers can leave the vehicle safely. The entire fleet is monitored around the clock with constant communication with passengers in the event of an emergency or technical failure. Ahmed Bahrozyan of Dubai RTA assured other drivers do not need to change their habits or invest in any new infrastructure to match the automated vehicles. He also explained that the vehicle technology will be adjusted in accordance with the unique driving style of each city and hopefully resolve the 90 percent of accidents caused by human error such as people falling asleep while driving or being distracted on their phones. 4,000 driverless taxis are expected to be launched on the roads by 2030. Road regulations in Dubai will be further adjusted to accommodate these driverless cars and the future autonomous vehicles that will be launched by other manufacturers. Cruise, Inc. recognizes Dubai as the firm’s first international partner who shared the dream of a new city system and a future of smart mobility.
