Abu Dhabi residents will soon see drones delivering food, documents and medical supplies in the city after a trial programme launches in the capital. The trial run of the drone delivery programme in Abu Dhabi will involve Emirates Post, AD Ports Group and aerial logistics provider SkyGo. Officials said details of the trial run will be released at the end of the year, with plans for a commercial launch slated for 2023. During the trial run, drones are expected to deliver medium-sized packages of medical supplies, fresh food and documents to Emirates Post sites within Abu Dhabi. A second phase of the programme will involve drones delivering parcels and documents over longer distances in Abu Dhabi as part of the initiative of Maqta Gateway, the digital arm of Abu Dhabi Ports Group; Emirates Post and SkyGo. Noura Al Dhaheri, chief executive of the digital cluster at Abu Dhabi Ports Group, is hopeful the drone delivery service would enable “faster delivery times for customers”. Abdulla Al Ashram, group chief executive of Emirates Post Group, said the drone delivery service can also help “alleviate road congestion and reduce fuel consumption in last-mile deliveries”.
