Authorities in Abu Dhabi said emergency teams swiftly contained a fire that broke out near the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the Al Dhafra Region following a drone strike incident on Sunday (May 17). According to authorities, the fire affected an electrical generator located outside the inner perimeter of the nuclear facility. Officials confirmed there were no injuries and no impact on the plant’s operational safety. The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) said all essential systems at the Barakah plant remain fully functional and that radiological safety levels were unaffected. In a statement, FANR said the incident “did not affect the operational safety of the power plant or the readiness of its essential systems,” adding that all units at the facility continue to operate normally. Officials said all precautionary and safety measures were immediately activated to protect the site and surrounding areas while specialised response teams moved quickly to contain the blaze. The Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, operated by the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation, is the Arab world’s first multi-unit nuclear energy facility and supplies a significant portion of the UAE’s clean electricity needs.
