18 websites blocked in UAE anti-drug crackdown

  DUBAI - A growing number of drug dealers are turning to the internet to sell illegal drugs, leading the Dubai Police to block 18 websites found to promote drug trafficking. “Drug dealers use the internet to sell drugs by giving a nickname or different name to the drugs. It is a big challenge for us. We have caught some suspects and drug addicts buying the drugs online,” said Brigadier Eid Thani Hareb, director of the Anti-Narcotics Department. Hareb said drug dealers create personal accounts for trafficking in drugs. “Social media is a wide and big platform as many people can easily make accounts. Despite that, we are focusing on them to block their accounts to prevent the spread of drugs in the UAE,” he said on Tuesday. Hareb said that a special department has been formed to monitor the internet over the sale of drugs and that he police force acts on tip-offs and monitors suspicious websites. “We blocked 18 websites involved in trafficking in and sale of drugs this year. All the sites were based outside the country," Hareb said. He said that electronic patrols work in coordination with the Telecommunication Regulatory Authority to block websites found to be promoting illegal activity. Dubai's continuing anti-drug crackdown has resulted in the arrest of 199 suspected drug dealers and users last year, representing a 121 percent increase in the number of drug-related arrests. The possession, use or sale of illegal drugs is a serious offence in the UAE, but under the UAE Anti-Narcotics Law, anyone who seeks treatment for drug addiction will be spared from prosecution.
