Erada Rehabilitation and Treatment Centre eyes facility to house female patients

  DUBAI – The Erada Rehabilitation and Treatment Centre is planning to build a drug rehabilitation facility for women and boys under the age of 16 in Dubai as a UN official noted an increase in the number of women and youngsters who abuse drugs. Erada centre chairman Dr. Abdulqadar Al Khayyat said: "A rehabilitation centre similar to Erada is needed for females and boys below the age of 16." Details as to when the facility for women and boys would be constructed and opened were not given. The Erada centre in Al Khawaneej, which opened last January, currently treats male drug abusers. Hatem Fouad Aly of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime visited the Al Khawaneej centre yesterday and said a new facility for women was needed. Fouad Aly said, "there's an increase in the number of women and children consuming drugs. Therefore, it's important to address this category of society in the treatment process." Fouad Aly is UNODC's representative and head of the sub-regional office in the Gulf region. Meanwhile, Al Khayyat said the Erada centre currently serves both Emiratis and expatriates in the UAE and in the Gulf region. "It can accommodate up to 1,200 people and is supplied with a team of specialists in treatment of drug addiction and psychological rehabilitation to help them to return to their true path," he said. Aside from treating drug abusers, Al Khayyat said the centre engages in information campaigns about the detrimental effects of drug abuse and how to tackle the problem.
