UAE police warn residents against WhatsApp drug deals

UAE police have reiterated a reminder to residents against responding to unknown messages on WhatsApp, with a police official saying that drug dealers use WhatsApp to target addicts. "The criminals would typically share GPS coordinates of the location of the drugs—which were usually buried in remote areas," said Brigadier Khalid bin Muwaiza, acting director of the General Department of Anti-Narcotics at Dubai Police. Here are warning signs that residents should look out for as well as tips to avoid being lured by drug dealers.

Avoid responding to unknown texts

The UAE police have received many of these complaints, prompting the authorities to intensify a crackdown and issue a warning: Never respond to these messages. Some gangs would give instructions on purchasing drugs along with images, movies, and audio clips, claiming they could deliver anywhere.

Beware of gangs using bank accounts for illegal drug trade

The Abu Dhabi Police is warning people not to open bank accounts for strangers. Although many of these gangs are located abroad, they use UAE-based accomplices to deliver drugs to people who have shown an interest. Most victims are unaware that providing these individuals access to their bank accounts could result in charges against them for being involved in the illegal drug trade and money laundering.

Keep an eye on young people's online activity

There are many concerns that the texts from WhatsApp have elicited responses from people out of curiosity, particularly young people. Drug dealers are constantly luring young people into addiction. With this, parents should always watch children's activities and online habits.

Report to the 'Safe Community' app

Other government entities want to end the drug dealers' operations on WhatsApp. The Federal Public Prosecution called individuals through an awareness video to report drug dealers through the 'Safe Community' app. UAE residents can easily file a complaint with utmost confidentiality through this channel.
