UAE's 2nd biggest telecom halts decline in quarterly revenues

DUBAI - The UAE's second largest telecom company has managed to halt a longtime decline in quarterly earnings after earning a flat profit in the second quarter of 2017 and surpassing analysts' expectations. Du announced that their net profit for April to June was at Dh443.2 million, a Dh3.9 million increase from the Dh439.3 million earned by the company during the same period last year, beating forecasts by industry analysts. Although it's just a slight increase, it gave du a break from several consecutive earnings slump. According to reports, NBAD Securities in Abu Dhabi had forecast a net profit of Dh387 million for du for the period while EFG-Hermes' estimate was Dh409.3 million. Du's revenues rose by six percent to Dh3.3 billion for the 2nd quarter, thanks to a nine percent-hike in fixed line revenues and a five percent increase in mobile revenues. Du's chief executive Osman Sultan said the company achieved a rise in mobile revenues, – which increased by 1.5 percent year-on-year during the first quarter, owing to a strategy "of focusing increasingly on attracting and retaining higher quality customers, with solid growth in postpaid customer additions." The telecom company derives much of its mobile revenues from prepaid customers, who generate a lower average revenue per user (Arpu) than postpaid subscribers. Du said it faces "challenging market conditions" and ongoing pressure on mobile rates and data monetisation, which is why the company plans to expand beyond its core business into managed services. Meanwhile, Sultan revealed that "thousands of customers" have signed up to Virgin Mobile service which was launched last May. Du had entered into a licensing agreement with Virgin Mobile last January to offer its mobile services to customers in the UAE.
