A 13-year-old Indian student’s sight was restored thanks to timely intervention by the medical team at Aster Hospital Mankhool in Dubai. The boy, an 8th grader, suffered a rare and severe eye injury while playing cricket. The incident occurred in a parking lot near the boy’s apartment when a cricket ball struck his left eye. Initially treated with an ice pack, his condition worsened, prompting his parents to visit Aster Clinic Bur Dubai. There, specialists referred him to Aster Hospital Mankhool, where Dr. Gazala Hasan Mansuri, Specialist in Ophthalmology, diagnosed a Giant Retinal Tear (GRT). “This was an urgent case. If untreated, such tears can cause retinal detachment, potentially leading to permanent vision loss,” Dr. Gazala explained. Using advanced diagnostic tools like Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and Fundus Photography, Dr. Gazala identified the tear as covering a significant 90-degree section of the retina. She quickly recommended a laser procedure to seal the damage. The outpatient procedure involved numbing eye drops for comfort and the use of a high-precision laser. The boy was discharged the same day, with follow-ups confirming his full recovery. He has since returned to India, with his vision restored. “Early diagnosis and intervention saved this young patient’s vision. Parents must seek immediate care for eye injuries,” Dr. Gazala added. Giant Retinal Tears, although rare, can lead to severe complications if untreated. Aster Hospital’s intervention underscores the critical role of advanced medical care in addressing such conditions.
