Two people are now in jail in Dubai after the Dubai Misdemeanor Court found them guilty of scamming a woman of Dh5,000 via WhatsApp. The court sentenced the two people to three months in prison, as well as deportation following their jail terms. Two other people, who are at large, received the same sentence in absentia. The court heard that the group lured the woman through an advertisement via WhatsApp, promising her of a quick profit. Deira Prosecution’s Chancellor Nasser Mohammed Al Mamari, who conducted the interrogation, said the scammers promised to pay the woman for clicking the “like” button of a visual content they selected. They also lured her into another scheme involving the transfer of money from her account to a third party. She started with Dh30 and received Dh60 in return. She then remitted Dh100 and received Dh150 in return. Trusting that her money will be doubled each time, she remitted Dh150 and received Dh300. She increased her remittance to Dh5,000, however, she did not get any money back and reported the incident to authorities. Authorities were able to track and arrest two suspects, who admitted to the charge of fraud via the internet, a crime under the UAE’s strict anti-cybercrime law. ICA/Expat Media
