Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has completed Phase Two of its Smart Pedestrian Signal Expansion Project, adding 10 more locations to its growing network of smart pedestrian crossings across the city. With 17 locations already operational under Phase One, the total number of intersections equipped with smart pedestrian signals now stands at 27. The project, part of RTA’s strategy to enhance road safety and promote intelligent infrastructure, includes locations such as Omar Bin Al Khattab Street, Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Street, Al Satwa Street, Salah Al Din Street, Amman Street, Al Qusais Street (near labour accommodations), and Oud Metha Street (in front of the school zone). “Results have shown improved safety levels at these pedestrian crossings since the signals became operational, demonstrating the system’s effectiveness in mitigating risk and enhancing the overall road experience for all users,” said Mohammed Al Ali, Director of Intelligent Traffic Systems at RTA’s Traffic and Roads Agency. The smart pedestrian signal system employs advanced thermal cameras to detect pedestrian movement, even in low-light or nighttime conditions. Integrated push-button devices register actual crossing requests, optimizing signal timings. “The smart signals are equipped with dynamic sensors that automatically adjust signal timings in real-time based on pedestrian speed,” Al Ali explained. “This enhances safety for seniors, People of Determination, and children while minimizing unnecessary vehicle stops.” He added that site selection is based on an evaluation matrix that includes road classification, accident history, accessibility of pedestrian bridges, and road design—ensuring that smart pedestrian signals are placed where they can have the most impact. The new installations come as authorities implemented a stricter federal traffic law that increases penalties for jaywalking. Under the updated law as of March this year, pedestrians crossing from undesignated areas could face a fine of up to Dh10,000 if their actions result in an accident. Those crossing in areas with a speed limit of 80km/h or higher, the penalties become more severe: minimum of three months in jail and/or a fine of at least Dh10,000. In recent months, Dubai Police also ramped up the installation of mobile surveillance cameras in religious areas, including Oud Metha and Jebel Ali. The cameras—mounted on wheeled platforms—are positioned near churches, temples, and mosques. Dubai Police confirmed to Expat Media that the new surveillance units are part of an ongoing initiative to enhance traffic safety in high-footfall zones, particularly around places of worship and pedestrian crossings.
