Round, bubble-wrapped luggage often jam baggage handling system at airport

  DUBAI – Starting March 8, the Dubai International Airport (DXB) will reject irregularly-shaped check-in luggage to avoid stalling the baggage handling system of the facility. Dubai Airports, operator of DXB, posted photos of luggage that are acceptable. Those covered with bubble wrap or do not lie flat on the floor will not be accepted as it slows down the system. "Dubai International has the most sophisticated baggage system in the world. However, even the most technologically advanced system can be disrupted by oversized or irregular-shaped bags," said Ali Angizeh, DXB vice president of terminal operations.  "Bags that are round or do not have a flat surface are by far the largest cause of baggage jams," he added. DXB has informed all airline companies operating at the airport about the new regulation and advised them to notify travelers in turn. "Passengers who show up at the airport with non-compliant baggage will be given the option to have it repacked in boxes for a fee," said Angizeh. DXB baggage operations head John Dyett, for his part, said irregularly-shaped bags were mostly wrapped in plastic and tied with rope.
