Gang that stole cars at Dubai airport jailed

DUBAI – A 7-member gang that stole cars parked at Dubai airport were sentenced to jail on Monday (August 10). The group had reportedly stolen six cars that were parked or abandoned at the airport, which were later sold to their accomplices. The Lebanese gang leader was sentenced to two years in jail, while four accomplices were sentenced to one year in jail. Two other gang members were fined Dh20,000 each for possession of stolen cars. The gang members will be deported from the UAE after completing their jail terms. The gang’s modus was discovered after a Swiss expat reported to police that his car was stolen from the parking lot of Dubai International Airport’s Terminal 1. The expat wash shocked to return to Dubai from France on November 20, 2019 and couldn’t find his car. Surveillance camera footage showed his car being driven out of the airport at 12:28pm. The gang members were able to drive the car out of the automated security gate by tailgating another vehicle. Police investigated the driver of the vehicle that was being tailgated and found out he is a friend of one of the gang members. Police were able to get leads from the driver regarding those involved in the car theft. Police were able to arrest the Lebanese gang leader who admitted that they jumpstart the stolen cars through electronic reprogramming. He also admitted that the car they stole from the Swiss man was sold for Dh20,000 and that it was later smuggled out of the country using a fake customs clearance document. ICA/Expat Media
