Dubai Airshow organisers have explained why the event’s final flying displays continued following the crash of an Indian Tejas fighter jet that killed Wing Commander Namansh Syal. In a statement on Monday (November 24), organisers said the decision was made “as a mark of respect” to the Indian Air Force pilot, who had been an integral part of this year’s airshow. “The Dubai Airshow organising team remains deeply saddened by the loss of Wing Commander Syal during Friday’s flying display,” the statement read. “In consultation with the team, the decision was made to continue the show as a mark of respect and tribute to his passion for aviation.” Organisers added that Syal had “earned admiration for his skill and dedication,” noting that the final displays “were performed in his honour,” followed by a formal service on Saturday celebrating his life and contribution to aviation. “Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences remain with his family, colleagues, and all those affected,” the statement concluded.

Honours in the UAE and India

Wing Commander Syal, 34, died after the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft he was flying crashed during an aerobatic display on Friday (November 21). His remains were repatriated to India on Saturday (November 22) in a ceremony attended by Indian Ambassador to the UAE Dr. Deepak Mittal and Consul General Satish Sivan. The UAE Armed Forces honoured him with a ceremonial guard of honour before a special Indian Air Force aircraft carried him home. On Sunday (November 23), Syal was cremated with full military honours at his native village of Patiyalkar in Kangra district. His wife, Wing Commander Afshan — also an IAF officer — emotionally saluted his tricolour-draped coffin, a moment that deeply moved mourners and military personnel. Syal was known for his discipline, professionalism, and skill. He had more than a decade of service and was posted at the Coimbatore base.
