Dubai motorists are enjoying smoother commutes as the Al Maktoum Bridge, one of the city's iconic structures, has fully reopened after five months of intensive maintenance work. The bridge’s partial closure, which began in September, involved phased shutdowns to ensure structural upgrades and enhance operational safety. Traffic on the bridge resumed normal flow on January 16, with January 19 marking the first Sunday since September that the bridge was fully operational. For months, motorists had to navigate alternative routes, such as the Infinity Bridge, Al Shindagha Tunnel, and Business Bay Crossing, during the bridge’s full-day Sunday closures and nightly shutdowns from Monday to Saturday. In a statement, the RTA emphasized the importance of the maintenance project, stating, “The maintenance work is crucial for ensuring that the bridge continues to meet modern safety and operational standards. As Dubai grows, maintaining the structural integrity of key infrastructure like Al Maktoum Bridge is vital.” Originally constructed in 1963, Al Maktoum Bridge has served as a crucial connection between Dubai’s historical and commercial hubs, Bur Dubai and Deira. Over the decades, the bridge has facilitated millions of crossings, replacing abra boats as the primary means of traversing Dubai Creek. The reopening has brought significant relief to commuters who have endured longer travel times and traffic congestion due to the closures. “This bridge is a lifeline for so many people. It was great to finally be able to travel through it on Sunday,” Mae Medina, a Dubai resident, told Expat Media. The bridge connects two of Dubai’s most bustling districts. On one side lies Bur Dubai, home to landmarks like the Dubai Frame and the vibrant Karama neighborhood. On the other is Deira, known for its historic Gold Souq and the iconic Clocktower. The reopening of Al Maktoum Bridge is expected to restore smoother traffic flow between these vital areas.
