Dubai boy Obaida's murder case: verdict out

  DUBAI – The Dubai Court of Appeal on Sunday (January 22) upheld a decision of the death penalty for the killer of nine-year-old Jordanian boy Obaida Sedqi. Nidal Eisa Abdullah had filed an appeal to have his sentence reduced despite being convicted by the criminal court of murder and rape of the boy. "Bringing justice after what happened to Obaida is our responsibility. We carry the heavy weight of his blood, and Dubai Public Prosecution will not accept less than the death penalty. We will follow this case through appeal, cassation and until the moment the killer is executed," Dubai Attorney-General Essam Al Humaidan had said in a Twitter post earlier this month, vowing that the convict will be put to death. Al Humaidan was responding an the argument of Abdullah's lawyer that the mental assessment report on his 48-year-old client did not state that his anti-social behavior is a disease. The mental examination report earlier declared Abdullah as alcoholic but sane although he is anti-social. "It (alcoholism) doesn't affect his (Abdullah's) perception and he can distinguish right from wrong," the report said. Abdullah kidnapped Sedqi from his father's garage in Sharjah on May 20 last year. He brought the boy to the Al Mamzar area in his car and raped Sedqi at the backseat before killing him. Two days later, Sedqi's body was found in Al Warqa, Dubai.
