Dubai: Arab woman fined for insulting, threatening to kill ex-husband

An Arab woman has been fined Dh5,000 for insulting her ex-husband and threatening to kill him in a mobile phone call that was put on speaker mode for the children to hear. The Public Prosecution charged the woman with using a mobile phone to insult her husband and harm his reputation and honor, and also for threatening to kill him. The Dubai Misdemeanor Court found her guilty of the charges but granted her leniency in the verdict under the UAE penal code. According to court records, the husband reported her to the Al Muraqqabat Police Station and submitted evidence of the phone calls, as well as presented two witnesses. He said that he divorced his wife three years ago and that they got into an argument because she failed to look after their children. He added that he submitted a report to a child protection institution for custody. Investigations confirmed the husband’s claims, and the child protection institution made the decision for the children to come under their father’s custody. That evening, he called his children on the mobile phone while they were with their mother, and she put the mobile phone on speaker mode while insulting him and threatening to kill him. She was apparently angered by the decision to hand over her children to her ex-husband. In court, the woman denied the charges. Two witnesses, however, confirmed the husband’s accusations against her. The court believed that the woman denied the accusations against her to escape punishment. ICA/Expat Media
