Dubai arrests 88 illegal street vendors in surprise inspections
A total of 88 illegal street vendors have been arrested in surprise inspections across Dubai since the start of Ramadan, according to Dubai Police. Police also seized several vehicles used to illegally sell fruits and vegetables by the roadside. Violators were found in labour areas and near residences, police said. More surprise inspections will be carried out to arrest violators, said Colonel Ali Salem Al Shamsi, Director of the Infiltrators Control Department in the General Department of Criminal Investigations. Al Shamsi said illegal street vendors will proliferate if the public continues to show interest and engagement. He warned residents against buying fruits, vegetables, food and other products from street vendors. The police official said illegal street vendors have products that “may be of unknown origin, expired, and may not have undergone proper quality control checks to ensure their safety and compliance with standards.” “In addition, they may violate health regulations and food safety standards, with poor display and storage potentially leading to product damage and serious health risks for consumers,” he said. The police official reiterated that consumers must only deal with licensed establishments.
