Dh45-million facility will feature a library, cafe and observation deck

  DUBAI – UAE residents will soon enjoy an out-of-this-world experience when the Dh45 million Al Thuraya Astronomy Center at the Mushrif Park opens in April. "Work is progressing well and I would say we are almost done," he said. "The building work is all completed now, so the focus is shifting to installing the technology and other facilities," said Hasan Al Hariri, chief executive of Dubai Astronomy Group. Because of the kind of weather and dust storms or sandstorms in the region, Al Hariri said they have "looked at every aspect of having a centre that will be able to meet the requirements of where we are in the world, so we've examined ways of preventing dust and sand getting inside, as well as coping with the hot temperatures and humidity." The astronomy center's dome is made of stainless steel 316, the kind of steel grade commonly used in building submarines, and the structure can withstand 400-kph winds as well as thermal layers to ensure that the temperature inside the facility stays at a level that does not damage the telescope. Al Hariri said a 1.5-meter telescope is being built by a Canadian company and will be installed in the facility later this year. It will have a protective cover against dust and sand. In the meantime, an auxilliary telescope will be used by the astronomy center. The center will have a library, cafe, observation deck where guests can bring their own telescopes to look at the sky, a 100-seat theatre, laboratories with three-dimensional printers, and lecture rooms.
