Starting January 1, 2025, Dubai will introduce a sweeping ban on single-use plastic products. This initiative aims to reduce environmental waste and encourage sustainable practices across the emirate. The announcement is part of Dubai’s larger effort to phase out environmentally harmful materials by 2026. “The phased rollout of the plastic ban ensures businesses have ample time to adapt while reinforcing our commitment to sustainability,” said a spokesperson for Dubai Municipality. What will the ban cover?

The ban targets a wide range of single-use plastics, including: Plastic straws Cups Stirrers Styrofoam food containers Plastic cotton swabs Table covers This builds upon the existing ban on single-use plastic bags introduced in 2023, which prohibited bags under 57 micrometres in thickness.

Why is the ban being implemented?

Dubai’s plastic ban aligns with global sustainability goals, aiming to reduce plastic waste, protect marine life, and mitigate environmental harm. Officials hope the move will encourage businesses and consumers to adopt eco-friendly alternatives.

What will replace single-use plastics?

Businesses are encouraged to switch to biodegradable or reusable materials. For instance: Paper or bamboo straws will replace plastic ones. Glass or stainless-steel cups and utensils are recommended. Recyclable packaging will become the standard for takeaways.
