Dubai-based Filipina loses Dh11,000 in scam

DUBAI – A Filipina engineer in Dubai lost Dh11,000 to a conman who asked her to wire the money and gave her access to his bank account that later turned out to be fake. Barney Almazar of Gulf Law told Khaleej Times that the man approached the Filipina and asked for her help, claiming that he was having problems with his bank account. He gave her access to his bank account to win her trust, Almazar said. When she logged on to his account, she saw about $1 million deposited there. She only discovered later that the banking site was bogus. The man reportedly asked her for $3,000 (Dh11,000) and claimed that he was in an offshore oil rig and had no access to the internet or a bank to withdraw his money. The woman sent him money through Western Union and did not think anything was amiss until she received messages that threatened that she was being investigated for money laundering. According to Almazar, investigation revealed that the woman was scammed by a person who was in Thailand. Last week, Philippine Ambassador to the UAE, Hjayceelyn Quintana, issued an advisory warning Filipinos to avoid investing their money in schemes solicited through social media. The warning came after a “recent proliferation of alleged investment scams online where individuals or group of individuals entice the public to invest in high-earning products”. The embassy quoted advisories from the Philippines’ Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) warning Filipinos about illegal investment-taking activities. ICA/Expat Media
