Dubai-bound Filipina ‘trafficking victim’ withheld at airport

A Filipina suspected on being a victim of human trafficking was barred from traveling to Dubai earlier this month, according to the Bureau of Immigration. The incident happened on March 3 at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport. Airport officers said the woman was attempting to board a Cebu Pacific flight to Dubai. The woman claimed to be traveling to the UAE alone for tourism purposes but later admitted to accepting a job offer received via Facebook. She was allegedly recruited as a household service worker and was offered a monthly salary of P20,000 (Dh1,321). The Philippine Embassy in Abu Dhabi and the Philippine Consulate General in Dubai have repeatedly issued reminders to Filipinos against falling victim to illegal recruitment schemes “Filipinos who fell victim to these illegal recruitment schemes, mainly through social media, were offered call center jobs in said countries but ended up being detained in their living quarters, forced to scam people online, and had their passports and mobile phones confiscated.
