Dubai building fire: Family of 2 Indians who died while saving others to get Dh45,000
The family of two Indian workers who died while trying to save others trapped in a Dubai building fire will get Dh45,000 in compensation. The Indian state of Tamil Nadu announced that the compensation will be given to the families of Gudu Saliyakoondu and Imam Kasim. According to reports, Saliyakoondo, a carpenter, and Kasim, a painter, rushed into the burning building in Dubai’s Al Ras area when fire broke out on Saturday afternoon (April 15). The duo was among four Indians who died in the building fire that killed a total of 16 people and injured nine others. The fire is believed to have started in an apartment on the fourth floor of the building. An investigation into the cause of the blaze is still ongoing. Chief Minister MK Stalin, meanwhile, said that the bodies of the two Indian workers will be repatriated to Tamil Nadu as soon as possible. Condolences have also poured in for a Keralite couple killed in the fire. The deceased have been identified as Dubai school teacher Jeshi Kandamangalath and her husband, Rijesh, who worked for a travel agency near their residence. The Indian couple died from asphyxiation. The couple was reportedly sleeping when the fire broke out. A social worker said the couple had taken a day off to celebrate the Indian festival of Vishu. As of Sunday, 12 out of 16 people who died in the fire have been identified, including the four Indians, three Pakistanis, four Sudanese and one Cameroon national. According to Dubai Civil Defense, preliminary investigations showed that the fire was caused by a “lack of compliance with building security and safety requirements”.
