Dubai’s iconic Burj Al Arab will temporarily close for 18 months to undergo an extensive restoration project, its operator Jumeirah Group announced on Wednesday (April 15). Often described as the world’s only “seven-star” hotel, the sail-shaped landmark has become one of the most recognisable symbols of Dubai since it opened in 1999. According to Jumeirah, the restoration will focus on refreshing the hotel’s interiors while preserving its original design and character. The company said the approach is similar to restoring a piece of art, ensuring that the building’s identity and heritage remain intact while upgrading the guest experience. Paris-based interior architect Tristan Auer has been appointed to lead the project following what Jumeirah described as a “strategic and rigorous” selection process. Auer is known for high-profile restoration work, including the Hôtel de Crillon in Paris. He trained under renowned designers Philippe Starck and Christian Liaigre before launching his own studio in 2002. “Being entrusted with the very first restoration of a property of this calibre in Dubai is a profound privilege,” Auer said. “To carry forward the legacy of such an extraordinary landmark is both an honour and a responsibility.” Standing at 321 metres on its own man-made island, the Burj Al Arab has long been associated with luxury, exclusivity and architectural innovation. It offers sweeping views of the Arabian Gulf and has hosted world leaders, celebrities and high-profile events over the years. The hotel has also gained global attention for unique moments, including a historic tennis match held on its helipad.
