Two Indian nationals and a British citizen are facing trial in Dubai for allegedly orchestrating a Dh180 million money laundering scheme involving cryptocurrencies. The Dubai Public Prosecution, in collaboration with the Dubai Economic Security Centre, dismantled the network, which operated across the UK and Dubai. The investigation uncovered links to unlicensed cryptocurrency intermediaries used to launder proceeds from illegal activities such as drug trafficking, fraud, and tax evasion. Authorities revealed that the international crime network involved 30 individuals and three companies, with the three accused at its core. The scheme relied on complex financial transactions to obscure the origins of the funds, funneling them through cryptocurrency channels in both countries. The suspects were apprehended following a meticulously planned operation that included freezing suspicious bank accounts and tracking crypto transactions. The trial, referred to the Money Laundering Court at Dubai Courts, aims to set a precedent for tackling crypto-related financial crimes. Convictions could result in severe penalties, including jail time, fines, and asset seizures.
