‘Dubai Can’ water fountains significantly reduced plastic water bottle usage in Dubai

The “Dubai Can” campaign unveiled five new water fountains at famous tourist spots and public parks, reducing more than 234,000 single-use plastic water bottle waste. Since the citywide sustainability movement’s launching on February 15, residents and visitors have enjoyed over 117,000 liters of water for free from Dubai Can water fountains. The five new water fountains add to the 39 Dubai Can water fountains already operating across the city. Initiated by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Crown Prince, the campaign invites UAE residents to reduce the usage of single-use plastic water bottles. “Dubai Can” encourages communities, companies, residents, and visitors to adopt small changes such as utilizing refillable water bottles and public water stations and installing water filters in their homes, workplaces, and schools. Yousuf Lootah, executive director of the Department of Economy and Tourism (DET), said that the Dubai initiative continues to gather momentum and is aiming to install 50 Dubai Fountains across the city by December 2022.
