British reality TV star-turned-podcaster Chris Williamson has sparked controversy after describing Dubai as “one of the most awful places on the planet” and a city with “very little soul.” His remarks, made on his Modern Wisdom podcast and amplified via social media clips, drew a sharp response from Ahmed bin Sulayem, chairman of Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC). “It is unclear what metrics you’re using to summarise what makes Dubai ‘one of the most awful places on the planet’,” bin Sulayem wrote in an open letter posted on Substack. “Not so awful that you’re returning for your Self Discovery Dubai Live 2026 event … which questions the integrity of your own soul.” Williamson is scheduled to perform in Dubai next year as part of his global tour. Williamson’s criticism leaned on clichés — Dubai as a city of skyscrapers without authenticity. Bin Sulayem countered, highlighting Dubai’s role as a trade hub and home to hundreds of nationalities who enjoy stability, peace, and opportunity. Despite his strong words, bin Sulayem extended an invitation. “It is clear that you’ve not had the opportunity to experience what Dubai truly has to offer,” he said, joining Dubai radio host Kris Fade in inviting Williamson to explore the city with locals.
