DUBAI - An officer of the Dubai Civil Defence who was speeding in a car with an expired licence as he hit and killed a female cyclist has been sentenced to six months in jail.
The Dubai court also fined the 22-year-old Emirati with Dh12,000 and ordered him to pay blood money of Dh200,000 to the victim.
The Emirati was racing with an unidentified driver when he hit the victim, Emirati Mizna Abdullah Ali in Dubai's Meydan area.
Ali was training with teammates of the Al Wathba cycling team at 10:35pm on May 23 when she was hit by the Emirati's vehicle. She died immediately from the impact of the crash.
Police said the Emirati driver was racing with an unidentified driver at the time of the incident.
The Emirati has been convicted of manslaughter, speeding, distracted driving, damaging property, driving a vehicle with an expired licence, making illegal modifications to the vehicle, using tinting above permitted limits, and illegal street racing.
The Emirati officer said he was driving within the speed limit, and was taken by surprise when the cyclist appeared less than three metres in front of his borrowed Nissan Patrol.
Ali's body was found flung 13 metres away from the impact, with her bicycle lying in the middle of the three-lane road.
Investigations revealed that the Emirati driver speeding and had tried to overtake on the hard shoulder when he ran over the Emirati cyclist.
The court has banned the Emirati officer from driving for three years after he serves his six-month jail term.
He is expected to appeal the verdict.
