Dubai clerk lands in court for starting fire at company residence

  DUBAI – A clerk is on trial in Dubai over charges that he set his residence on fire after consuming alcohol. The 26-year-old Indian defendant told the court he had no recollection of the incident. “I was too drunk… I do not know what happened. I am not guilty,” he told the judge at the Dubai Court of First Instance. His Moroccan workmate, however, testified in court that the Indian had started the fire in revenge. “He claimed to me that after the company cancelled his residency, he started a fire in the building to harm the company… he told me he did that in a fit of revenge,” the Moroccan told the court. The witness said he noticed the defendant’s face was smeared with a powdery substance. “Suddenly, the alarm system went on… I asked him to leave the flat and went out with him, then we went out of the building completely. He was too drunk,” he said. The court will issue a verdict on August 14.
