A Dubai-based dermatology clinic is encouraging men to do more than just grow a moustache — they’re urging them to check their beard-area moles for early signs of skin cancer. Athena Dermatology Clinic has launched a campaign offering dermatologist-led mole checks focusing on the beard line, neck, ears, and scalp — areas most men tend to overlook. The quick, painless checks use dermoscopy, a magnified, light-assisted exam that allows dermatologists to spot abnormalities invisible to the naked eye. Dr. Parul Thakur, dermatologist and co-founder of Athena Dermatology Clinic, said: “Facial hair hides high-risk zones. If a mole is changing, looks odd compared with your others, or fails to heal, that’s your cue to see a dermatologist.” Globally, 331,700 people were diagnosed with melanoma in 2022, according to GLOBOCAN. Although rare in the UAE, around 31 new cases were estimated that same year — showing that vigilance still matters. The UK’s Cancer Research projects over 21,300 new melanoma cases by 2025, with 87 percent linked to UV exposure. Men are particularly at risk for melanoma on the head, neck, and torso, where facial hair or scalp hair can easily conceal early warning signs. When caught early, five-year survival rates reach 99 percent, but prognosis is worse if scalp lesions are diagnosed late. Athena Dermatology uses the ABCDE(F) rule for early detection: • Asymmetry • Border irregularity • Colour changes or multiple colours • Diameter greater than 6mm or fast-growing • Evolving in any way • Funny-looking, Feels different, or Fails to heal Dr. Akreti Sobti, dermatologist and clinic co-founder, added: “Small tweaks make a big difference — a sharp blade, with-the-grain passes, and a simple, fragrance-free moisturiser straight after shaving.”Moustache skin survival tips
• Use lukewarm water and gentle, fragrance-free cleansers. • Shave with the grain using a sharp single blade. • Avoid harsh aftershaves; apply fragrance-free moisturiser right after shaving. • Skip shaving for 24–48 hours on irritated areas. • If bumps persist, use benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, and see a dermatologist if infection occurs. The clinic’s message is clear: growing a moustache is great — but checking what’s under it could save your life.
