Dubai: Company accountant, brother jailed after stealing over Dh5 million

An accountant and his brother were each sentenced to five years in prison and deportation after stealing Dh5 million from a tobacco trading company. The accountant, who worked in the company, deceived a cashier and took a key and safe card from him. Last March, an investor who works at the company in Dubai Silicon Oasis asked the cashier to bring him some money from a safe to pay for company purchases. A few moments later, he heard the cashier scream. On arriving at the safe, he found the cashier in hysterics and the safe empty. The first suspect was an accountant at the company, and the police apprehended him with almost Dh1.2 million worth of cash, jewelry, and electronics in possession. The accountant confessed to stealing from the safe during the questioning. To pull off the theft, he enlisted his brother's help. The accountant made copies of the safe card and key and gave the originals to the accountant to return to the cashier. The convicts admitted that they had sent part of the money to their relative, who was involved in illegally transferring money to their home country. They were found guilty and given a five-year prison term with mandatory deportation by the Dubai Criminal Court. The court also ruled that they must make joint payments to restore the stolen funds.
