Dubai Police has confiscated 15,029 scooters and e-scooters over the past five months amid a crackdown on unsafe riding practices that have already claimed four lives this year, a top official revealed. Major General Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, Acting Assistant Commandant for Operations at Dubai Police, said that many of the confiscations were due to non-compliance with traffic laws—such as riding scooters in prohibited areas, by unqualified individuals, or without safety equipment like helmets. “These figures reflect the continued presence of dangerous practices that jeopardize lives,” Al Mazrouei said. “Some violations involved scooter use by individuals under the legal age, which increases the risk of accidents.” Police noted that most violations occurred in high-traffic areas, underscoring the risk posed to public safety. Alongside scooter-related accidents, Dubai Police also issued 28,027 fines for jaywalking, with nine deaths linked to unsafe pedestrian behaviour. Dubai Police, in partnership with the Roads and Transport Authority, are rolling out public awareness campaigns to curb the rise in traffic violations. “Traffic safety is a shared community responsibility,” Al Mazrouei emphasized. “Non-compliance with laws can lead to more than just fines; it can result in tragic consequences.” He urged residents and visitors to strictly follow scooter-use guidelines, wear helmets, and avoid riding in non-designated areas. The public is also encouraged to report dangerous behaviour through the “Police Eye” feature in the Dubai Police app or by calling the “We Are All Police” hotline at 901. ICA/Expat Media
