Dubai has seized more than 35 tonnes of counterfeit, smuggled, and substandard goods in what officials are calling the largest crackdown of 2025, according to Dubai Customs on Wednesday (August 13). The massive three-month operation, led by Dubai Customs across all air cargo centres, targeted shipments that threatened consumer safety, intellectual property rights, and the integrity of global trade. The haul included over 12 million smuggled cigarettes, 6.7 million counterfeit cigarettes, 37,110 non-compliant cosmetic products, 3,632 undeclared electronics, and 10,520 counterfeit items bearing global brand names. “This sends a clear message to anyone attempting to manipulate the global trade system or undermine Dubai’s secure customs leadership,” said Dr. Abdullah Busenad, Director General of Dubai Customs. “These seizures reinforce Dubai’s position as a pioneer in legitimate trade, enhance national security, and protect brand owners—thereby driving the national economy.” The operation used advanced scanning systems, targeted shipment tracking, and detailed manual inspections conducted by skilled inspectors trained in X-ray image analysis. Sultan Saif Al Suwaidi, Director of Air Cargo Centres, noted that every parcel undergoes comprehensive checks, while suspicious shipments receive a full physical inspection. Dubai Customs’ Intellectual Property Rights Protection Department also reported registering 159 trademarks, 63 commercial agencies, and one intellectual property asset this year. In 2024 alone, the department recorded 285 IP violations involving counterfeit goods worth Dh92.695 million — including fake watches, electronics, clothing, and accessories.
