A Gambian woman and her Nigerian husband were sentenced to life in prison and fined Dh500,000 each by the Dubai Criminal Court for attempting to smuggle 4.2kg of marijuana into the UAE. Customs officers at Dubai International Airport detected irregularities in the woman’s luggage during a routine inspection. The marijuana was concealed in vehicle filters. Her husband was later arrested while attempting to collect the shipment. Despite their initial claims of innocence, forensic evidence, digital communications, and their prior involvement in similar activities led to their conviction. In addition to their life sentences, the court ruled that the couple would face deportation after serving their terms. Unpaid fines will result in additional jail time. ICA/Expat Media
