Dubai: Court grants leniency for a young woman who stole Dh117,000 from her aunt

The Dubai Criminal Court granted a young woman amnesty because of her age. She was given a one-month prison term with a three-year suspension for taking Dh117,000 from her aunt's safe. After learning that her niece had taken the money over time, the aunt decided not to pursue the complaint. The victim, who did not suspect anyone of the crime, was shocked to discover that Dh117,000 was gone from her safe, according to official court documents. She informed the police as a result, who came to her home and gathered fingerprints and other evidence. It was later discovered that the victim's niece had gradually removed the sum from the safe. The accused used the money to buy a phone, perfumes, and other personal items. The victim admitted during the investigation that she would put some savings in envelopes. But one day, she realized that her safe was missing Dh117,000. During the inquiry, the accused admitted to the crime and claimed that while living in her aunt's home, she had observed her putting significant sums of money in her safe. She thus stole various sums of money over a long time. The accused claimed that she went to her aunt's daughter (cousin) and confessed since she was aware that her aunt had reported the theft to the police. The victim chose to withdraw the claim and demanded proof. BKM/ Expat Media
