Dubai cracks down on social media accounts of fake goods sellers

DUBAI – A total of 8,894 accounts on Instagram, Facebook and other social media sites have been shut down following Dubai's crackdown on fake goods sales. The Department of Economic Development (DED) said officials tracked fraudsters and closed down their social media accounts as part of the government's efforts to protect trademarks and eliminate practices that are harmful to e-commerce. The accounts that were shut down had a combined 94.5 million followers, with 80 percent of the accounts on Instagram accounts. Fraudsters also used Facebook and Twitter. "Social networking accounts have come in handy for many who trade in counterfeit goods nowadays but the Electronic Compliance section maintain tight vigil to prevent such misuse of modern technology and protect the reputation of Dubai as a competitive business hub," said Ibrahim Behzad, Director of Intellectual Property Rights Protection Management at DED. Behzad said the fraudsters sold fake items that included bags, perfumes, watches, cosmetics, phones and accessories. He said that authorities raided villas, warehouses and apartments where the fake goods were stocked. He also urged the public to report fake goods sellers on the number 600 54 5555 or through twitter account @Dubai_Consumers.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
