Dubai Creek Tower: What happened to UAE’s tallest tower to surpass Burj Khalifa?

It has been seven years since Dubai announced the construction of Dubai Creek Tower, a super skyscraper that is going to surpass the Burj Khalifa as the world’s tallest. Whatever happened to it? According to the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, construction of the Dubai Creek Tower is currently “on hold”. There were no further details released. The Dubai Creek Tower, whose construction began in 2016, was designed to eclipse the Burj Khalifa, which stands at 2,716.5 feet and has held the title of world’s tallest structure since 2010. According to Emaar, the Dubai Creek Tower will be taller than the Burj Khalifa, but the developer said it will only announce the exact height of the tower on its official opening. The Dubai Creek Tower, designed by Santiago Calatrava Architects & Engineers, is inspired by the minaret, a structure traditionally used for Muslim call to prayer. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, reportedly chose the winning design from among design pitches from the world’s top architects. The skyscraper had an estimated cost of $1 billion. The tower will feature multiple cutting-edge observation decks with 360° views of Dubai Creek Harbour and the Dubai skyline. It will also feature dynamic lighting, with advanced technology to enable the tower to emit a “beacon of light” from its peak. At the foot of Dubai Creek Tower is the Dubai Creek Plaza is a clock-shaped leisure area spanning 0.5 kilometre that will have retail shops and an amphitheater. ICA/Expat Media
